How My Mother's Request Brought Us Closer to Divine Mercy

We lost our mom in November of 2006. She fought for 6+ years with ovarian cancer and showed everyone around her how to suffer with grace, dignity and a deep belief in God.

In February after our mom passed away we were able to order her headstone. We asked our dad what he would like it to say. He said he saw this prayer once that he wanted on it and gave it to me; “Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy Immortal One Have Mercy on Us”.

So thinking this was very nice we ordered her marker. Sometime during that same month our father awoke to my mother calling his name at 3 AM who said, “Ron wake up, Ron wake up, go pray right now.” He said he knew it was not a dream but something he must do immediately. He went and found our mother’s prayer book and when he opened it, what he saw was the Divine Mercy Prayer and Novena. He felt very bad that we had not said the Divine Mercy for our mother. So he asked his nine children to pray this prayer and have more masses said for our mom which we did. Our father found this just in time for us to participate in Divine Mercy Sunday.

When our mother died, our father had been praying the St Teresa Novena for her. On Divine Mercy Sunday at Holy Family Cathedral in Orange, my brother, not knowing this, handed our dad a rose for the service. He knew then our mother was in Heaven with God, for his prayer to St. Teresa had been answered.

I have since been able to pray the Divine Mercy Prayer for my father-in-law who just passed away in May. I felt happy and relieved that I could do that for my husband and his family and it is what our mom would have wanted for me to do.
